Blood Clots, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) & Pulmonary Embolism
What
is Pulmonary Embolism? (Canadian Lung Association)
Discusses pulmonary embolism, its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and
treatment. [10/06]

Warfarin
vs Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin Therapy in Cancer Patients (The
Oncologist)
Comprehensive article in the January 2005 issue of The Oncologist
that addresses the issue of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer
patients. Discusses current treatments and elucidates the advantages and
disadvantages of treatment with warfarin (Coumadin) as compared to low-molecular-weight
heparins such as dalteparin (Fragmin). [1/05]
Low-molecular-weight
Heparin vs Coumarin for the Prevention of Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism
in Patients with Cancer (PubMed)
Abstract of a study published in the July 10, 2003 issue of the New
England Journal of Medicine that compared the efficacy of a low-molecular-weight
heparin with that of an oral anticoagulant agent in preventing recurrent
thrombosis in patients with cancer. Study concluded that in patients with
cancer and acute venous thromboembolism, dalteparin was more effective
than oral anticoagulant in reducing the risk of recurrent thromboembolism
without increasing the risk of bleeding. [7/03]
Prospective
Evaluation of Major Vascular Events in NSCLC Patients Treated with Gemcitabine
& Cisplatin (PubMed)
Prospective study published in the January 2005 issue of Cancer
that found vascular events (coagulation disorders, thrombosis) to be common
occurrences in NSCLC patients treated with chemotherapy. Strategies to
predict the occurrence of vascular events should be developed to spare
this life-threatening toxicity. [1/05]
