Educational article aimed at oncology nurses addressing the problem of mucositis, one of the most debilitating effects of cancer therapy. Mucositis (also called stomatitis is an inflammation and ulceration of the oral mucosa and submucosa. It may be present as minor mouth tenderness or severe painful ulcerations that can reduce the patients quality of life. Consequences of OM include infection, severe pain, difficulty or inability to swallow or speak, malnutrition, dehydration, and concomitant electrolyte imbalances. This article discusses the background, symptoms, assessment tools and treatment guidelines for this potentially serious treatment-related side effect. [7/06]
