The Biopsy
Report: A Patient's Guide (Edward O. Uthman, MD)
Excellent patient introduction to biopsy and pathology. Covers excisional,
incisional, endoscopic, colposcopic, fine needle aspiration, punch and
bone marrow biopsies; specimen processing; and pathological examination.
Includes a glossary of important terms used in pathologic diagnoses. [11/97]

Bronchoscopy
Review
of Recent Advances in Fluorescence Bronchoscopy in Localization of Central
Airway Lung Cancer
by Timothy C. Kennedy, Stephen Lam and Fred R. Hirsch
v.6, no.3 The Oncologist (June 2001): 257-262
Comprehensive report on the use of fluorescence bronchoscopy for detecting
early lung cancers. Notes that fluorescence bronchoscopy technology may
be of value in detecting subtle synchronous malignancy in preoperative
lung cancer patients as well as perhaps more accurately estimating the
extent of cancer prior to resection. [6/01]

Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy
EBUS
Increases Yield for Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (Medscape)
Reports on a randomized study presented at the 2002 CHEST annual
meeting that compared endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided transbronchial
needle aspiration (TBNA) to conventional TBNA in 200 patients referred
for TBNA of enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes. EUS-guided TBNA demonstrated
significantly increased yield, suggested that EBUS-guided TBNA is a superior
approach. Registration required for free access to Medscape. [11/02]

Mediastinoscopy
(Harvard Family Health Guide)
Explains mediastinoscopy: what it is, how to prepare, what to expect,
and what to do afterwards. [10/99]
