Specific Therapies
bisphosphonates • radiation therapy • radiofrequency ablation (rfa) • radiopharmaceuticals • surgical strategies

General Information

Bone Complications in Lung Cancer (HealingWell.com)
Describes bone metastasis, discusses treatment options and suggests questions to ask your doctor. [6/02]

Bone Metastasis Facts (Bone Metastasis Clinic, Comprehensive Cancer Center University of Michigan)
Comprehensive information on bone metastasis, including symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Includes frequently asked questions about bone metastasis.

Bone Metastasis (bonetumor.org)
Offers a basic introduction to bone metastasis, including a section on bone metastasis from lung cancer. [1996]

Imaging of Bone Metastasis

Evaluation of Bone Metastases in Lung Cancer (H.Lee Moffitt Cancer Center)
by Poonam Malhotra, MD and Claudia G. Berman, MD
v.9, n.3 Cancer Control Journal (May/June 2002): 254-55
Case study illustrating how FDG-PET scans offer advantages over bone scans for detecting bone metastases from lung cancer. Suggests that FDG-PET can be useful in determining the presence of active metastatic disease following treatment and is useful in monitoring response to therapy. (Be sure to click on the "Discussion" button at the bottom of the page.) [2002]

MR Imaging of the Spine is Superior to Bone Scintigraphy in Diagnosis of Spine Metastases in Patients with NSCLC (ASCO)
Abstract of a retrospective study presented at the ASCO 2000 annual meeting that compared bone scintigraphy (BS) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for patients with NSCLC and back pain. Study concluded that MRI of the spine should be the first test to evaluate any patient with NSCLC and back pain. [5/00]

Specific Therapies

Bisphosphonates

Zometa (Lung Cancer Online)
Provides links to information on Zometa (zoledronic acid), a bisphosphonate used to treat bone metastases from lung cancer.

Radiation Therapy

Single- vs. Multiple-fraction Radiotherapy in Patients with Painful Bone Metastases: Cost-Utility Analysis Based on a Randomized Trial (PubMed)
Study published in the 2/5/03 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that single-fraction radiotherapy provides equal palliation and quality-of-life when compared to multiple-fraction radiotherapy with no differences found in life expectancy. [2/03]

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation Effective for Pain Associated with Osteolytic Metastatic Lesions (Medscape)
Reports on a multicenter study presented at the 2002 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting that demonstrated dramatic reductions in pain and improved quality of life in patients receiving radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treatment of osteolytic metastatic lesions. Registration required for free access to Medscape. [12/02]

Radiopharmaceuticals

Quadramet: Patient Information (Cytogen)
Manufacturer's information on Quadramet, a radiopharmaceutical designed to relieve pain from bone metastases.

Surgical Strategies

Surgery Provides Relief in Treating Spinal Cord Compression (People Living With Cancer)
Reports on a study presented at the 2003 ASCO annual meeting that found surgery followed by radiation was more effective than radiation alone in relieving spinal cord compression. Spinal cord compression is a painful and debilitating condition that may occur when cancer spreads to the vertebrae and causes pressure on the spinal cord. [5/03]

Pain from Bone Metastasis: Surgical Strategies (MD Anderson Cancer Center)
Discusses surgical options to relieve pain from bone metastasis. [4/01]

Vertebroplasty: Is It Right for You? (MD Anderson Cancer Center)
Discusses the pros and cons of vertebroplasty, a technique used to treat vertebral compression fractures, including those caused by metastatic cancer. [12/01]

International Conference on Bone Metastases (ICBM): Cement Filler Prevents Bone Metastases (Doctor's Guide)
Study results reported at ICBM (June 2000) found that advanced cancer patients with bony vertebral metastases may have prolonged pain relief and delayed metastatic-tumor growth when the bony lesions are filled hot plastic cement in a procedure known as vertebroplasty or cementoplasty. The procedure can be done in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. [6/00]

Vertebroplasty (Massachusetts General Hospital)
Answers frequently-asked questions about vertebroplasty: what is vertebroplasty? what are the results of vertebroplasty? how is vertebroplasty performed? what are the risks of vertebroplasty? who is eligible for vertebroplasty? Includes information on pre-procedure evaluation and post-procedure care that applies specifically to services at Mass General Hospital, however, the general information is useful in any case.
